Mashudu Radamba had never gone this deep before. For three relentless days, he prowled the citys underbelly, hunting the four boys who had crossed the linewho had dared to steal from him. By Monday night, their names were no longer a mystery. He had shaken the ground so hard that every old hand still loyal to him was combing the inner city. The hard part was done. Finding them? That was only a matter of time. That night, he slept with the calm of a man who knows the kill is coming. Tomorrow, he told himself, he would finish what he started. Their punishment was already scripted in his mind, carved in stone. It wasnt going to be quick. But Tuesday morning twisted the game. He was gearing up for the hunt when his phone buzzeda call from one of his eyes on Lillian Ngoyi Street, right where the robbery had gone down. They got them, the voice said. Cops picked up the boyswith the gadgets. Mashudu froze, the words sinking like ice. The hunt was overbut not the way he wanted. He moved fast, dialing a number burned into muscle memory: Lieutenant Mazibukoa man who had buried more than one inconvenient mess at Johannesburg Central. Take the gadgets, Mashudu said. Release the boys. Ill handle the rest. It wasnt supposed to be complicated. He and Mazibuko had done worse in that stationthings that couldve blown the roof off if anyone ever talked. This..? This was childs play. From the moment the gadgets vanished, Mashudu had told himself it didnt matter. Hed get them backwith or without the files. He knew the rule: stolen laptops dont last a day on these streets without a wipe. Fail that, and youve got a problem the second the cops catch you fumbling with someone elses password. So no, he didnt panic. His focus was never on the datait was on making an example, Punishment, Sending a message that would echo through every alley and taxi rank. But then everything tilted sideways. Something no onenot even Mashudusaw coming. He had run plays like this for years and walked out clean every time. So why was this one different?
