Relax, Sergeant. Hes with me. Relief punched the air from Mkhizes lungs. He pushed forward, handing the grey backpack through the open door. Thank you, Sergeant, Kgole said, sincerity softening the steel in his voicesomething Mkhize hadnt heard since the day they were paired. Where to now, sir..? Mkhize asked. Youve done your job, Sergeant, Kgole replied, Where Im going only Im cleared to be there. Themba stiffened a ripple of unease ticking in his jaw. Time was bleeding out. Kgole felt it too. He clutched the backpack, dipped his head once, and disappeared into the Hilux. The door clicked shut. Mkhize lingered, uncertainty gnawing at him. But orders were orders. He turned and walked back toward the lift, jabbing the call button with a hand that trembled despite his training. The play began. The Hilux reversedslow, deliberateand tucked in behind the Corolla as it coughed to life. Smoke billowed thick, curling through the incline like a sacrificial shroud. The first few meters looked promising, and then the old engine buckled halfway up the grade. Wheels spun helplessly. Smoke thickened. Traffic stacked fast. Horns spat fury into the tunnels throat. Perfect. The Hilux hugged the Corollas bumper. Behind them, the Audi slid into position like a blade finding its sheath. Last came Thembas BMWsmooth as silkanchoring the tail and sealing the artery. Then came the magic. With the tunnel blind in smoke, Themba slipped from his car like a wraith. He strode to the Hilux, yanked open the rear door, and dragged Kgole into the fumes. No hesitation. No words. The Captain vanished into the Corollas back seat. Themba sprinted back to the BMW, heart slamming but face stone.
